Why Playing It Safe Won’t Get You Far

I’ve been on countless panels as a moderator and panelist, and here’s something I’ve noticed: many people play it safe. They stick to scripted answers, avoid anything remotely controversial, and say what they think others want to hear.

I get it. There’s a lot at stake. Cancel culture, fear of judgment, and the pressure to “look good” can silence even the most insightful voices. But when everyone plays it safe, we lose something vital: the opportunity to connect meaningfully, spark real conversations, and challenge the status quo.

Why Speaking Up Matters

Authenticity isn’t just refreshing, it’s necessary. When you hold back your opinions or tailor your words to avoid conflict, you miss the chance to create change.

I spoke to Tjin Lee, a trailblazer in the luxury and lifestyle sector, and founder of Mercury Integrated,  on my podcast this week. She shared how she faced backlash for her Life Beyond Grades campaign. Her call for less competitive parenting struck a chord but also attracted criticism that it came from a place of privilege. She could have stayed silent, but she continued to speak up for what she believed in, sparking much-needed conversations about mental health and the pressures we place on kids.

The Courage to Be Authentic

In today’s world, authenticity can feel like a double-edged sword. People crave it, but being real also makes you vulnerable to criticism. However, people’s reactions often reflect their own insecurities, not your truth.

Authenticity is about aligning your actions and words with your values.

  • Where can you show up more authentically, in your work, your relationships, or even with yourself?

  • What’s one area of your life where you’ve been holding back?

  • How can you embrace imperfection to focus on what truly matters?

You don’t have to struggle alone to find your voice. Check out our workshops to help you break free from people-pleasing habits and learn to assert your boundaries. It's crucial to release what no longer serves us and embrace the expansiveness of who we are meant to be. When you shatter limiting beliefs, you put yourself on the agenda, and transform from your own worst critic into your best coach and best friend.

Control the narrative. Get comfortable telling your story authentically. Let go of what’s holding you back, and show up fully in your work and life.

Much love,
Crystal
