Crystal's Weekend Notes - 7 May 2023

How to live a life of passion

Hello from KL! We’re here this week to run a leadership retreat for aviation leaders, and we will be back for sure because there have been so many requests from our Malaysia friends to run events here. Here are the weekend notes:

On growing your passion

This week, I had lots of conversations about passion with our community.

I think social media features a lot of people who are “living their best lives and pursuing their dreams” and that makes people compare and despair when they feel as if they haven’t “found their passion” yet.

When I ran a careers centre at a University, I used to tell the students:

  • Most people don’t find their passion, they grow their passion by having a mindset of curiosity and trying out many different things

  • Some of these things you try will grow into small “p” passions, and those may develop into Big “P” Passions

  • Very few people have clarity in their 20s what they want to do. And even if you do have a big passion, that is probably likely to change over your life, so don’t get into this mindset of finding The One Big Thing.

  • Rather, think of continuously curating new experiences for your work / life portfolio - e.g. living overseas for a few months, trying out a new hobby, joining a social networking club, volunteering, giving a free talk at an event…. Think of all these experiences as planting seeds which may blossom into grand passions at different stages of your life

  • Research suggests that the average human at this point changes careers about 7 times in their life (and probably more in the future), so it’s important to be flexible and accumulate a broad range of skills and experiences, especially with the wave of disruption that AI will surely bring to the landscape of jobs.
