What do people say about you when you’re not in the room?
Your job title may change. Your reputation and relationships travel with you.
Human beings are judgment factories.
By the time I walk onto a stage, most people have already formed an impression of me. They've noticed how I carry myself, what I'm wearing, and whether I seem confident, warm, intimidating, or slightly overdressed for lunchtime.
Before I've said a word, their brains are already creating associations.
And no matter how capable AI becomes, you're probably not going to see me walk into a room, take out your phone, and ask ChatGPT:
"How do I feel about this person?"
You already feel something.
AI can summarise my career and analyse my LinkedIn profile, but trust, chemistry, and connection aren't created by information alone. They're experienced.
That is personal branding.
Your personal brand is the collection of associations people have with your name when you're not in the room. The question is whether you shape those associations intentionally, or allow people to create an accidental brand for you.
This matters even more as AI transforms work. Job titles will change, skills will become obsolete faster, and more people will be able to produce polished work at speed.
Your reputation becomes one of your most portable forms of career capital.
Here are seven ways to build it:
1. Be known for the problems you solve.
Your job title tells people where you sit. It does not always explain the value you create. Ask: What problems am I particularly good at solving, and for whom?
2. Treat LinkedIn as your landing page to the world.
Don't only document where you've worked. Show what you know, what you care about, and the outcomes you create. Use specific details and numbers where you can.
3. Be a giver.
Celebrate other people's wins. Make introductions. Share opportunities. Recommend good people when they're not in the room. Strong networks are built through generosity, not transactions.
4. Increase your surface area of luck.
Get outside your usual circles. Try new things. Take on projects where the outcome isn't entirely predictable. Luck needs somewhere to land.
5. Network with intention.
Don't collect contacts. Build relationships. Five meaningful conversations can be more valuable than 50 exchanged name cards.
6. Build social capital before you need it.
Think of relationships like a bank account. Make deposits by staying connected, contributing, and following through. Don't wait until you need support to start building trust.
7. Be intentional about your associations.
Ask trusted people: What are the first three words you associate with me professionally? Listen for the gap between the brand you intend to create and what people actually experience.
This week, review your LinkedIn profile, reconnect with someone without asking for anything, and share someone else's work.
AI can help you think faster and reach further. But it cannot decide what you stand for, build trust on your behalf, or replace the experience of being someone others want to work with.
What do you want people to associate with your name — and what evidence are you giving them this week?
Warmly,
Crystal
