"Comfort Zone Kills Dreams" Is Bad Advice

You've heard it a thousand times: "Your comfort zone is killing your dreams."

And I want to push back on that.

Not because I think staying comfortable is the answer. But because I think this advice is doing more harm than good, especially for people with big ambitions and even bigger hearts.

Here's what the research actually shows.

The Yerkes-Dodson Law tells us that there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between stress and performance. Too little stress and you're bored, coasting, not growing. Too much stress and you shut down completely. The sweet spot, the place where real growth happens, is in the middle.

Flow theory says the same thing. Too little challenge leads to boredom. Too much leads to overwhelm and panic.

This is why I named my podcast Comfort and Growth. Because you actually need both.

Your comfort zone isn't the enemy. It's where you rest, integrate your learning, and consolidate your skills. Your growth zone is where you run stretch experiments. But your panic zone? That's where dreams go to die.

And here's what I see happen all the time with talented, capable people:

They have enormous dreams. They want to lead, to be an influence, and make a real impact. But the moment they're asked to speak up in a room full of senior stakeholders, negotiate with presence, or navigate complicated workplace politics, they hit the panic zone. They freeze. They shrink. They go quiet.

And slowly, without even realising it, they start making their dreams smaller to match their comfort zone.

That's not a comfort zone problem. That's a capability problem.

Because when you build the right skills, what once felt terrifying starts to feel manageable. Then familiar. Then natural. The growth zone expands, and so does your influence.

This is exactly what we address in Deep Human Influence, our masterclass in influencing, gravitas, and navigating work politics. We'll teach you how to communicate with charisma and clarity, handle tough conversations with confidence, and navigate difficult situations without shrinking yourself in the process.

Because your dreams deserve a comfort zone big enough to hold them.

We also have other transformative programmes coming up. Lead from Within with Dr Harold and Leanne Robers, a 2-day retreat on resilience and self-mastery on 2nd and 3rd May (only 4 spots left).

The Good Girl Trap: Stop Carrying Everyone and Start Living Your Own Life workshop. Jutka was one of our community's favourites in 2025, and she's flying in from Australia to help capable women step out of the hidden patterns of being overly helpful, worrying too much, or being over-responsible, at the cost of their own lives. (6 Spots left in the Morning Session, Afternoon Session: SOLD OUT)

Much love,

Crystal
