Most leadership advice focuses on strategy and vision but the leaders who thrive long-term master these five underrated skills too.

1. Persuasive communication
   This is not just about how well you speak or write, but how well you influence, persuade, and move people with your words and presence.

2. Social capital
   Your network matters. How well can you hire, ask for help, and build bridges?

3. Decision-making
   Do you have a good process and can you defend your decisions if they go wrong?

4. Energy management
   How you show up matters. Can you maintain your energy, transmit it, inspire, motivate and attract others to you?

5. Conflict resolution
   Can you stay calm in chaos and solve problems without fuelling the fire? The truth is, you can’t lead others well until you’ve learnt to lead yourself. Ask yourself this: what do you do when you’re triggered?

What To Do When You’re Triggered

In the most frustrating of situations, the most powerful thing you can do is stop, step away and ask:

• Who do I want to be in this moment?

• How do I want to be remembered?

• What do I want others to say about me when I’m not in the room?

During such situations, it is important to connect with your values. How do you want to show up? If you’re not clear about your values, pick someone you look up to in this context and try to do a perspective shift. What would this person do in this situation?

Self-leadership is not soft. It’s the sharpest tool you have when stakes are high and emotions are hot. If you want to lead with clarity, presence and calm power, here’s where to begin:
