Mentorship Matters

Did you know that Gartner research found that people with mentors were promoted 5x more often than those who didn’t have mentors?

How To Get A Mentor

Firstly, be realistic. If you are eyeing a senior stakeholder, they are probably being approached by tons of people all the time. Someone who has high potential, and just a few years ahead of you is probably just as helpful, if not more.

Mentors are also attracted to people who are doing interesting things. They do not necessarily have the time nor skills to find out what you want to do in life - that is the role of a coach. (Greg and I discuss in my latest podcast episode the difference between a coach/mentor/therapist/ psychotherapist/ psychiatrist. Click here for the breakdown!)

When you first reach out, try to ask them for a coffee to ask their advice on a specific question. Don’t tell them you want them as a mentor right away — that’s like asking them if they want to marry you without even going on a first date!

How To Prepare Yourself For Mentorship

  1. Get clear on your goals: Do you want to build connections, improve your public speaking skills, or gain more visibility in your career?

  2. Manage your expectations: Remember, mentors aren't coaches. They might give you straightforward opinions that challenge your thinking.

  3. Know you have a choice: You don’t have to agree with everything your mentor says. You’re an adult, and you get to make your own decisions!

  4. Do your homework: Before reaching out, check out their LinkedIn profile and career highlights. This shows respect and helps you understand how you can benefit from their experience.

  5. Prepare questions: Go into your first meeting with clear and specific questions. Keep it simple; you don’t want to overwhelm them with too much background information.

Career Conversation Questions

  1. Appreciate Uniqueness: What are my strengths? What potential do you see in me?

  2. Assess Capabilities: How would you rate my performance/skills on a scale of 1-10? What feedback or advice do you have for me?

  3. Anticipate: What organisational changes or industry trends do you see impacting our future?

  4. Align Aspirations: My career goals are… Which are the most realistic? What strategic priorities can I help with?

  5. Accelerate Learning: What training or learning would be helpful for me?
