Rely on Systems, Not Motivation
I get asked this question a lot: How do you consistently keep your energy and motivation at peak levels?
Here's the brutal truth: you can't.
Energy and motivation naturally ebb and flow in cycles. Some days you wake up ready to conquer the world. Other days, you can barely get through your inbox.
Most people think the solution is to find ways to stay motivated all the time. But that's exhausting, and it sets you up for failure.
What actually works? Building systems that catch you when motivation is low.
Let me give you an example. Let's say your goal is to eat healthier and lose fat.
A good system does three things:
It reduces friction to the desired behaviour. For example, place prepared healthy snacks in the most visible part of your kitchen so they're easy to reach.
It increases obstacles to the unwanted behaviour. You throw out all the junk food and uninstall food delivery apps.
It increases your capability. You learn how to cook healthy meals or hire a trainer to teach you proper nutrition.
Now apply this to other areas of your life. Maybe your goal is to stop scrolling social media so much.
You can't rely on willpower or motivation. Instead, you build a system: uninstall the apps, turn your phone to black and white, put interesting books by your bed, and block time in your calendar for real-life activities.
The point is this: motivation will fail you. Systems won't.
